Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy
With pregnancy, vaginal discharge can increase. It Is often a thin, milky type discharge known as leukorrhea. Estrogen increases blood flow to the pelvic area which stimulates the mucous membranes.
While the discharge can be annoying (most people find that wearing cotton underwear or a pantyliner if needed is helpful) it protects the vagina from infection by helping to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria. It is important not to scrub this way with soap or douching.
If the discharge is accompanied by a significant odor, itching, or burning please call your provider.
